Flying Drones in Yeovil

Under the new UK legislation that came into force in November 2019, it is illegal to fly most model aircraft outdoors (including toy drones and helicopters) that weigh over 250 grams (approx 8.8 ounces) unless you have registered with the CAA and passed the competency test

There are exceptions to this rule:

  • Control Line models;
  • Model Balloons;
  • Model Rockets.

In addition, within Yeovil (and all the surrounding area marked in blue in the map below) you may not fly any model or toy unless you comply with the following:

  • You must be a member of the Westland and Yeovil District Aeromodellers Club and be flying at the Leonardo (Westlands) airfield, or
  • You must apply for and receive specific written permission from either Leonardo Helicopters Ltd or RNAS Yeovilton (HMS Heron) depending on your specific location within the blue areas on the map.
Restricted airspace in the Yeovil area.

Further detail may be found at the CAA website. In addition, useful information is available from the BMFA here.
